On the bottom of India’s four main varna groups, “Dalit” is the name chosen for the untouchables of this caste system; it means broken or crushed. It represents their history of oppression, exploitation and injustice, being one of the most grievously treated groups in one of the most tenacious hierarchies in the world. These photographs are a series of portraits and daily-life scenes of the Dalits in rural Mainpat, India.
